New Pattern: Santi Skirt by Designer Stitch

New Pattern Release

One of my favourite pattern designers, Ann from Designer Stitch, has released a new pattern this week – the Santi Skirt.

This is such a great everyday skirt, its classic a-line shape makes it so easy to wear, either dressed up or dressed down. It is designed for woven fabrics, especially medium weight fabrics such as denim. My skirt is made from a printed cotton drill.

It does, of course, have pockets! And they are a good size too.

One of the main style features of this skirt is the top-stitching, you can see that just about every single seam on my skirt is top-stitched with a double line. The pattern instructions feature a good amount of detail to help you get it right – i.e. which side of the seam to press and top-stitch. I actually kind of ‘cheated’ a little, because I used my coverstitch machine to do all the top-stitching – it worked really well and made this a really quick sew. If you’re a regular reader, you will know that I love a pattern that sews up quickly – a bit of almost instant gratification!

Also notice that this pattern includes a fitted belt! The belt perfectly matches the shaping of the skirt and is fastened at centre front with a simple leather tie threaded through eyelets. I recently acquired a heavy duty tool for installing eyelets, I bought it mainly so that I can put drawstrings into hoodies for the kids, so I was feeling quite pleased that I could also use it on a garment for myself.

The skirt sits on the natural waist and is nicely shaped to fit over the hips, ending at about knee-length, I’m not very tall so the hem is slightly longer on me, I didn’t adjust the pattern at all. The sizing is consistent with other Designer Stitch pattern, and if you have made another one of Ann’s designs, you will be familiar with the detailed table of measurements that are included to make sure that you select the correct size for you, grading between sizes is also really easy, the pdf is layered, so you can print just the size (or sizes) that you need.

The skirt has a zip fastening at the back. It ends up being mostly hidden behind the belt, but just so you know – it is a metal zipper, not an invisible zipper, there are full instructions provided in the pattern to install this correctly.
