Recently I’ve been trying to broaden my sewing experience, I’ve been doing some new things – I’ve even sewn something for my husband! This skirt, I made for me.
I’ve had this pattern for a while, its the Calista skirt from pattern No. 18 by Lila Tueller Designs. There are two skirts included, I made the other one, Athena, about 18 months ago.
The Calista skirt is a yoked, 3-tier, patchwork skirt with a hem band. The yoke and hem band are cut from yardage, but the 3 tiers are made from charm squares!
This was a very easy pattern, the pre-cut charm squares meant that there was very little work to be done to prepare the pieces.
This fabric is called Spellbound, its by Cotton & Steel. I love these prints, they have a really fun gothic horror look with vintage style potion bottles, cats, jewelled spider webs, mysterious forest scenes … and its some of the small details that really make it special – like how the polka dots are actually tiny skulls!
The colours are really nice too, just my style. My kids think the mummys look like monkeys though!
The construction is simple – the charm squares are joined together in long rows to make each tier and then gathered onto the tier above.
I did all the straight line stitching on the overlocker, and top stitched each seam down. Unfortunately, I was using two different coloured threads, so even though this kept the outside looking very neat, the insides look a bit odd.
But, at least there are no loose threads.
The lower tier is finished with a small ruffle.
Its a great skirt and with its elastic waist, very comfortable to wear. I love it.
Thanks for reading.
