This is my second post for Watcha Wearin January, and my first ever sewn up pattern by Violette Field Threads. This is pretty much what Veronica will be wearing for most of January – when she’s not in swimming gear that is!

The Pattern

This is the Madison dress by Violette Field Threads (VFT). I bought the pattern quite recently, mostly because it was promoted as an ‘everyday’ dress.

I’m not sure why I haven’t sewn any VFT patterns before, I’ve been admiring them for years. I’m certainly not disappointed with this one.

Let me run through the features of this dress. Firstly, there’s the very pretty bodice. This has some nice little pin tucks, which I trimmed with lace.

And a faux placket with some painted wooden buttons (Veronica picked those out herself).

The faux placket continues down through the skirt too.

The cap sleeves are very sweet!

This was the first time that I used the ‘burrito’ method to attach the lining. The instructions provided with the pattern were very clear and I ended up with a very neat result – although it was a bit rough on the fabric, especially with the double gauze that frays soooo much.

The back is just gorgeous…

Instead of making ties for the closure, I used the same lace to match the front.

This will keep her nice and cool during the super hot days that we are having.

The dress also has neat little pockets.

The Fabric and Laces

Last year I made Mathilda a dress with this fabric and the same laces. Veronica was very keenly eyeing it all and requested that I make her something with the same materials. Mathilda and Veronica have quite different tastes when it comes to dresses, Mathilda would wear princess dresses forever, but Veronica doesn’t like things that are too ‘big’. So I needed to choose a different pattern, but the fabric was good for both.

It is a printed double gauze, the laces are both vintage coordinating pieces that I have hoarded in a box with lots of other goodies. I like the contrast of the colours between the laces and the fabric.

This dress has just enough twirl for Veronica, and is also the perfect length.

The fabric is so lovely and soft, and lightweight, and perfect for our hot summer. Veronica will be wearing this one all summer long.
